General Care of Centipede Grass

(The most popular of the warm-season grasses)

March

DIMENSION* 0.21% Plus Fertilizer

This product provides pre-emergence control of many types of crabgrass when applied prior to the emergence of crabgrass from the ground in established lawns and ornamental turfs.   It can also provide early post-emergence control of those same grasses when emerging from the ground.  It is best applied several days after mowing, or delay mowing for several days after application.  Rain or irrigation after application of the product will aid with weed control. Use 5.5 pounds/1000 square feet in March

April

CROSSCHECK EZ Granular

Applied in April and again in July to control Ants (including Imported Fire Ants), Mole Crickets and other insect pests on lawns.   The application rates vary, but on the high end, 4.6 pounds/1000 square feet.

May

15-0-15 with 3% FE

A general use fertilizer, 15-0-15 is applied in May as the turf begins to green up with a second application in June.  Do not apply to wet foliage.  This particular formulation includes iron (FE).  Iron, in particular chelated iron, helps with a quick green up, especially in high pH lawns.  Use at the rate of 5 pounds/1000 square feet.

August

5-10-31 with 10% FE

This fertilizer/iron blend is to be applied at the rate of 3.2 pounds/1000 square feet in August. Again, do not apply to wet foliage.

September

0-0-8 with .43% STONEWALL

Used in the latter parts of the growing season it encourages grass to go dormant as the fall approaches.  STONEWALL is a pre-emergent for fall weeds.  Use in September at the rate of 5.3 pounds/1000 square feet.

Having moved from central Virginia, my knowledge of warm season turf grasses was limited. In Richmond, grasses were fed heavily in the fall using the SOD program, or September, October and December applications. Vigorous lawns were difficult to maintain and grass cutting had to be a priority. I've found turf culture easier here, but timing of fertilizers and pesticides are different. While the above recommendations are specific, the timing of applications is more important than the exact formulation or brands included. This is an aggressive program designed to rapidly establish a centipede lawn. Start by knowing where you stand on pH and nutrient levels. Soil testing is done by the county extension service as a free service. Click on the link to the right to view maintenance guidelines for other warm season grasses. It is from the Brunswick County Extension Service web site.
